Solar incentives explained: credits, rebates and net metering
Tax credits, utility rebates and export payments can change your payback by years. Here is how each one works and what to ask before you sign.

Solar incentives come in three main flavours: credits that reduce your tax bill, rebates paid per kilowatt installed, and export payments for the energy you send back to the grid. Most homeowners qualify for at least one.
Net metering and export payments
With net metering, the energy your panels export during the day offsets what you import at night. Some utilities pay a lower export rate instead, which makes a home battery more valuable.
What to ask your installer
- Which incentives are included in the quoted price?
- Who files the rebate paperwork?
- How do export rates affect my estimated savings?
Incentive programmes change often, so always confirm current eligibility with your utility and a tax professional.
