Onboarding that converts: seven patterns from 40 product teardowns

What the best sign-up flows have in common, and the small details that quietly double activation.

Over the past year I took apart the onboarding flows of forty products, from banking apps to note-taking tools. A handful of patterns showed up again and again in the ones that convert.

1. Show value before asking for data

Let people try something meaningful before the form. Every field you move after the first win lifts completion.

2. Make progress visible

A simple "Step 2 of 4" reduces drop-off more than any illustration. People want to know how long this will take.

3. Explain the why

One short line about why you need an ID scan or a phone number builds more trust than a long privacy page.

The best onboarding feels like the product itself, not a toll booth in front of it.
